What's happening at Doggo Den?
Putting Dogs Before Profit
When we built Doggo Den, it wasn’t just to create another dog daycare — it was to fix what we felt was broken.
As dog trainers, we were becoming increasingly frustrated (and honestly, a bit heartbroken) by the lack of transparency and low standards of care we saw around London. Too many places called themselves “daycares, or resorts” yet dogs spent 80% of their time in crates or kennels aka a glorified prison. During COVID, when proper socialization was most important, there simply weren’t any good options.
So we made an agreement, one that still drives every decision we make today: Dogs come first. Always.
From the very beginning, every service we designed was built from a training-based perspective, not for convenience, but for the wellbeing and growth of the dogs in our care. We wanted a place where dogs could learn, play, and thrive – not just managed.
And that’s how London’s first training-based open play daycare was born.

Common Questions
Are you a positive reinforcement only trainer?
It depends! In our training practice, we deeply appreciate the strengths of positive reinforcement and employ it extensively. Indeed, depending on the specific dog and circumstances, positive reinforcement can account for 50-100% of our obedience and behavior-shaping strategies. Our philosophy recognizes that every dog is an individual, influenced by a host of factors including how they were nurtured, breed-specific traits, unique personality, temperament, and the environment they live in. These aspects profoundly shape how a dog perceives and interacts with the world. As professional dog trainers, we see it as our responsibility to acknowledge these individual differences by adapting our training approach for each unique dog, shaping and molding our techniques to suit their specific needs and circumstances.
However, our experience and professional understanding have taught us that an approach combining different methodologies often achieves balanced, resilient, and long-lasting results more effectively. While positive reinforcement is powerful and forms the backbone of our training, we recognize that real-life scenarios, especially in busy working family environments, require adaptable solutions. This recognition is where gentle corrections—verbal, visual, or physical (such as leash pressure)—can come into play, contributing approximately 10% to our approach. These mild interventions help guide dogs away from undesirable behaviors and foster a well-rounded, disciplined companion.
We hold a firm belief that continuously "throwing treats" to shape behavior can potentially lead to dependency, bribing and imbalance, not just in the dog's behavior but also in the owner's ability to maintain consistent training cues. It requires impeccable timing and consistency from the owner, which can be quite challenging.
Nonetheless, we acknowledge that there are situations where positive reinforcement exclusively is not just necessary but the most compassionate approach. Specifically, in cases with traumatized or extremely fearful dogs, we shift our strategy. For these sensitive animals, we prioritize building trust and confidence, often employing a 100% positive reinforcement method tailored to their pace.
Our commitment is always to the well-being and balanced development of your dog, ensuring they are learning in a manner that respects their individual needs and psychological state.
What methods do you use?
I use
- Positive Reinforcement
- Negative Reinforcement
- Positive Punishment
- Negative Punishment
- Free Shaping
- Desensitization
- Counter Conditioning
- Classical Conditioning
Every dog responds differently to each method and during obedience training every method is always paired with another. The one method that dominates all the others for frequency of use is easily positve reinforcement.
What tools do you use?
In our training practice, we select from a range of tools to aid in the communication process between you and your beloved pet. These tools serve as an extension of our training techniques, each chosen based on the individual dog's temperament, behavior, breed, and specific needs. Here is a list of tools we might use:
Martingale collars
Slip leashes
Prong collars
E-Collars
Long lines
Retractable leashes
Our approach is never one-size-fits-all, and as such, there isn't a single tool we reach for every time. The frequency with which we use these tools varies significantly; some are rare choices, called upon only when particularly suited to a dog's training requirements, while others are integral to our daily practices.
It's important to emphasize that the purpose of these tools is to enhance the clarity of communication with your dog. They are used as reinforcers, facilitating clearer guidance and understanding, not as punishments. Each tool, when used correctly and responsibly, helps in conveying commands and feedback in a way that supports the dog's learning process, contributing positively to the development of behaviors that are beneficial for both the pet and owner.
In every situation, our primary aim is to ensure that the tools are used in alignment with humane, respectful training practices, focusing on building a relationship based on trust and positive reinforcement. We are always open to discussing why a particular tool is recommended and how it functions as part of your dog's individualized training program.
How does your off-leash training program work?
Embarking on off-leash training is a significant step and a liberating experience for both dogs and their owners. Our unique program is designed to create a reliable communication line between you and your dog, even in environments where your dog is not physically tethered. One of the central tools we utilize for this level of training is the remote collar, a device known for its effectiveness in gaining a dog's attention even from afar.
However, it's important to clarify that our use of the remote collar differs significantly from common misconceptions. We use it as a means of positive or negative reinforcement rather than correction (positive punishment). The sensation provided by the collar is akin to a tap on the shoulder, a gentle and non-intrusive reminder that helps the dog understand and respond to commands, reinforcing communication without inducing stress or fear.
For the off-leash program, we recommend that dogs are at least 6 months old. This minimum age ensures they are developmentally ready to comprehend and respond to the cues given via the remote collar, ensuring that the training is both effective and affirming. It sets the stage for your dog to explore the world more freely and confidently while maintaining the discipline to follow your guidance for their safety and well-being.
This training phase is a journey, and we're committed to guiding you and your dog through it. We believe in the power of positive reinforcement and the profound bond it helps foster between you and your pet, making the adventures you undertake together more enjoyable and secure.

Dock Diving Pool
All proceeds from our swim services continue to go towards improvements at the resort. Your support and referrals mean everything to us.
Lifejackets are mandatory unless you can show staff your dog is a confident and capable swimmer without one.
Splash Pond
Just starting out in your swim career? The splash pond (Area 6) is exactly where you need to be. Gradual 6 inch steps going from 2 inches of water to 2 feet as a nice and slow introduction to the water complete with a new dock for your dog to jump off of once their confidence has increased.
Inground Pool
Area 5 is an inground, light saltwater pool (leaving your dog’s fur feeling nice and soft). As a natural progression from our splash pond (area 6), this pool sets up your dog with the skills necessary to use an exit ramp for safety as well as increasing jump distance from a new dock, with a longer deeper pool – great for the next level of dock diving.
Hydro therapy is a great low impact energy burn for older dogs or those that can’t physically exercise any other way. The shallow area of the pool features easy access dog steps for those with hip and muscle problems.
Lifejackets are mandatory unless you can show staff your dog is an excellent swimmer without one.

Doggo Den Reviews
Doggo Den truly cares about our furry friends. Every visit feels warm, welcoming, and filled with tail wags!

I’ve been bringing my dog Gus to Doggo Den in Westmount (and previously the Fairview location) since he was 5 months old. He is 1 year old now and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. I am thankful they opened up the Westmount location as it is closer to home. Gus always comes home tired for a couple of days after daycare, which is perfect because it helps him burn off extra energy and stay well socialized. What really sets Doggo Den apart is the training focused approach. Max, Laurie, and the entire team are true trainers first, and it shows in the way they handle and care for every dog. Safety is always the top priority, and I feel completely at ease leaving Gus in their hands. The facility is great and I’m excited to see the upcoming renovations. I highly recommend Doggo Den to anyone looking for a safe, structured, and fun environment for their pup.Posted on Google Joe and AmandaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Winnie has been going to the Doggo Den Westmount for Daycare & grooming since the location opened in August and she LOVES it! Her tail starts wagging as soon as she hears the Doggo Den taxi pull up outside, and she is a happy, tired pup when she comes home in the evenings! With Max, Laurie, and the team's encouragement, Winnie has become more social and learned how to play, socialize, and relax with the other pups. We love seeing daily photos and videos on Instagram of Winnie playing (and snoozing!) with her friends. The Doggo Den approach to grooming has made a HUGE difference in our lives. After a regular trip to the groomer as a puppy, Winnie suddenly became very anxious and stressed about getting bathed/brushed. She would not let anyone brush or touch her paws or ears and would growl and threaten to bite when the groomer got too close. After being turned away from multiple groomers (both in-home/mobile and salon grooming services), we were starting to worry we would not be able to find anyone willing to work with Winnie. We booked a full groom at Doggo Den with wonderful Cheyenne, who had already gotten to know Winnie and built a close bond with her over the weeks they spent together at daycare. With patience, encouragement and care, Cheyenne and the amazing Doggo Den staff took such good care of Winnie throughout the groom - going at Winnie's pace - and she came home looking clean, soft, and (most importantly) relaxed and calm after her groom. It has been a HUGE relief for us to know that Winnie has found her person for grooming and baths - someone she feels comfortable and safe with. So grateful to Cheyenne and the team for their amazing patience and kindness - thank you!Posted on Google Jeff NTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My dog and I absolutely love Doggo Den! He has become more confident and less anxious. He plays with small and big dogs that have very similar calming behaviours so this has helped him tremendously with his anxiety. They have worked on some of his behaviours and this has helped within the home. I also love how open and honest they are with me. They are always available for questions and all the staff members are super friendly and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!Posted on Google Shannon WoodhouseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A Thoughtful, Professional Experience Integrating Our Rescue Dog I’ve been unbelievably impressed with the professionalism and care Max and his team have shown as we worked to integrate our rescue dog, Gracie, into their facility. Gracie Lou is a bully mix, and with that comes the challenge of overcoming preconceived notions about her breed. Max took the time to meet Gracie before opening their new location, carefully assessing whether she would be a good fit. He was understandably cautious, but also open-minded. We had a long, thoughtful conversation about her behavior, and he requested videos of her interacting with other dogs to better understand her temperament. I appreciated his thoroughness and patience — it was clear he was looking out for both his business and the safety of the dogs in his care. When Max agreed to give Gracie a chance, I was thrilled. He personally oversaw her first day, kept me updated throughout, and even shared photos and videos on Instagram so I could see her enjoying herself. She had a fantastic first day and came home happy and exhausted. The real moment of reassurance came on her second day. As soon as we arrived, Gracie ran to the door, gave me a quick look that said, “You can go now, Mom!” and eagerly entered the facility. That told me everything I needed to know — she feels safe, happy, and well cared for. I have confidence in Max and his team and that Gracie is in good care. Their professionalism, compassion, and dedication to the dogs in their care is clear.Posted on Google Toni MageeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My dog and I are so grateful for their excellent service and friendly staff. The owners have always been so helpful to us. Because of their screening practices, I can feel confident that my dog is in a safe, training based environment where he can thrive. Booking is easy and they even have a doggie taxi (outfitted perfectly). And to my pleasant surprise, they've added grooming to this new location. Their groomer did such a wonderful job with my dog. You won't be disappointed if you choose Doggo Den....one stop shop for all doggie needs.Posted on Google Susan HannahTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We can’t say enough great things about Doggoden Westmount! Our dog Cassie absolutely loves her time there, whether it’s during daycare or or her recent weekend boarding. Max, Laurie, and their incredible team treat every dog like family. The hands-on training during daycare, along with the extra time they’ve given Cassie for recall training, has made such a huge difference. Cassie’s reactivity has improved by more than 75% in the short times she's been going—she’s no longer terrorizing the people and dogs walking on the path behind our house. Now, we can actually sit and enjoy our yard as a family without the constant stress. The level of care, dedication, and expertise from the staff is unmatched. If you’re looking for a daycare or boarding facility that goes above and beyond, Doggoden Westmount is the place. We feel so lucky to have found them!
